Thumping win fails to end relegation fears

HIGH Wycombe RFC admit they’re in a relegation scrap despite just trouncing the team placed third in South West 1 East 34-7.
It’s just another anomaly in a completely bizarre season for the Kingsmead club.
Apart from their win over Cheltenham last weekend, they have also thrashed second-placed Salisbury, beaten fourth-placed Coney Hill away and given leaders Maidenhead two tough matches.
Despite that though, they are just two places above the drop zone.
Head coach Paul Gaster said: “I can’t say we’re too good to go down because results and the table don’t lie.
“We’ve hammered three of the top four and should’ve beaten Maidenhead, but then you look at the table and it’s just ridiculous.
“If you’re in the position we are, of course you’re worried about relegation, especially when you’re as inconsistent as us.
“We’ve got seven games left. We’ve got to pull our finger out and get some results.
“We must put a bit of space between and the teams just below us.”
Countering those good results, there have been some shockers too.
They conceded a half-century of points to Witney mid-season and have lost to three of the bottom four to maintain a neat symmetry of results.
Gaster said: “As a coach you start to doubt yourself and what you’re doing, but then you look at some of the good rugby we’ve played this season and it’s the best since I’ve been here.
“We are in transition and I’m just looking forward to getting a few results and then building on this next season.”
But whether they’ll be in level six or level 7 will depend on their form down the run-in, starting at Reading on Saturday.
Gaster said: “We’ve only got to lose to Reading and the teams below us win and it really puts the cat among the pigeons.
“It’s time to stand up now.”
They do go into the match in good form though.
After conceding an early try to title-chasing Cheltenham last weekend, Wycombe found a higher level and proceeded to run in six tries in a storming victory.
